Sunrise (サンライズ?, Sanraizu) è un marchio e gruppo di produzione giapponese appartenente a Bandai Namco Filmworks, originariamente nota come Sunrise Inc., l'azienda è stata rinominata nel 2022 come parte di una riorganizzazione aziendale. Tuttavia, il nome "Sunrise" continua a essere utilizzato come marchio per le sue produzioni, preservando la storica identità legata a numerose opere iconiche nel panorama dell'animazione giapponese.

Storia

Sunrise ha prodotto e animato la serie Gundam, uno dei franchise di maggior successo e di grande rilevanza nella cultura popolare mondiale.

Nel 1972, un gruppo di ex dipendenti dalla Mushi Production fondò la società di produzione di anime Soeisha Co., Ltd. Nello stesso anno, fu istituito Sunrise Studios, Ltd. come sede produttiva di Soeisha[1]; tra i personaggi coinvolti vi sono Tadao Nagahama, Yoshiyuki Tomino e Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. A causa della mancanza di fondi, Soeisha ottenne investimenti da Tohokushinsha, diventando una sua sussidiaria e subappaltatrice[2]. Soeisha si occupava della pianificazione e delle vendite, mentre la produzione degli anime veniva realizzata da Sunrise Studios[3]. Di conseguenza i diritti d'autore delle opere di quel periodo riportavano esclusivamente la dicitura "©Tohokushinsha"[1].

Secondo un'intervista con i membri di Sunrise, l'azienda decise di organizzare la produzione degli anime concentrandosi sui produttori, piuttosto che su un singolo creatore, come avveniva in altre realtà, ad esempio la Mushi Production guidata da Osamu Tezuka. Poiché il mercato degli anime mainstream, come le trasposizioni di manga, le serie sportive e le storie per bambini, era già dominato da altre aziende, Sunrise scelse di specializzarsi nei anime con i mecha, un genere più complesso da animare ma con un forte potenziale commerciale legato alla vendita di giocattoli[4].

Nel 1977, lo studio Sunrise si separa dalla Soeisha, diventando indipendente con il nome di Nippon Sunrise[1]. Tra il 1977 e il 1979, il duo formato da Yoshiyuki Tomino e Yoshikazu Yasuhiko creò un trittico di serie che ridefinì il genere robotico, inaugurato dalla Toei Animation con Gō Nagai nel 1972: Zambot 3, Daitarn 3 e Mobile Suit Gundam. Nippon Sunrise si dedicò quasi esclusivamente al genere mecha fino alla fine degli anni ottanta. In seguito, con il cambio di nome nell'attuale Sunrise, diversificò le proprie produzioni, esplorando una vasta gamma di generi[1].

Lo studio è famoso per serie anime originali e adattamenti di grande successo, sia critico che commerciale, come Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, Densetsu kyojin Ideon, I cieli di Escaflowne, Love Live!, Code Geass, Tiger & Bunny, City Hunter, Inuyasha, Gintama e molti altri. La maggior parte delle loro opere è composta da titoli originali, ideati internamente dal team creativo dello studio e firmati con lo pseudonimo collettivo Hajime Yatate, che non rappresenta una singola persona, ma simboleggia il contributo congiunto di tutto lo staff.

Nel 1994, lo studio è stato acquisito dalla Bandai (successivamente Bandai Namco Holdings)[1] e, nel 2022, l'azienda Sunrise Inc. è stata riorganizzata come divisione interna della Bandai Namco Filmworks[1]. Tuttavia, il nome Sunrise non è scomparso, rimanendo in uso come marchio ufficiale per le produzioni di Bandai Namco Filmworks.

Durante la lunga carriera dello studio, diversi membri dello staff, tra cui animatori e produttori, hanno lasciato l'azienda per fondare altri studi, alcuni dei quali sono diventati altrettanto famosi.

  • Studio Deen - fondato nel marzo 1975 da Hiroshi Hasegawa e Takeshi Mochida.
  • Studio Dub - fondato nel gennaio 1983 da Masa Yahata, acquisito e diventato BNP Iwaki Studio nel 2019.

  • A-1 Pictures - fondato nel maggio 2005 da Masuo Ueda e Mikihiro Iwata, un produttore dello Studio 5.
  • Bridge - fondato nell'agosto 2007 da Chie Ohashi con membri dello staff dello Studio 6.
  • Odd Eye Creative - fondato nel febbraio 2011 da Naotake Furusato.
  • Yaoyorozu - fondato nell'agosto 2013 da Tatsuki, chiuso nel 2020, l'attività di animazione è stata trasferita e integrata nella nuova compagnia 8million.

Le opere realizzate tra il 1977 e il 1987 sono state prodotte sotto il nome di Nippon Sunrise. L'invincibile Zambot 3 rappresenta il primo lavoro originale dello studio[1]. Durante questo periodo, Sunrise produrrà Mobile Suit Gundam, una serie che diventerà pioniera del genere mecha e non solo, aprendo le porte a un vasto universo narrativo, l'Universo Gundam, che continua ancora oggi a evolversi con nuovi capitoli e installazioni.

Lo studio cambia definitivamente il nome in Sunrise[1], e la prima opera sotto questo nome sarà Mister Ajikko. Durante questo periodo, Sunrise ha prodotto numerose opere di successo che hanno lasciato un'impronta indelebile nel mondo dell'animazione. Tra queste, spiccano titoli come Mobile Suit Gundam: Il contrattacco di Char, I cinque samurai, I cieli di Escaflowne e molti altri. Questi anni sono stati fondamentali per consolidare la reputazione di Sunrise come uno degli studi di animazione più influenti e innovativi del settore.
