Adjacent is the much smaller, but beautifully executedmonument of his daughter Medea. — S. Grata, adjacent to anunnery, contains fine paintings and reliefs. On the slope ofthe hill, in the street leading to the lower town, is situated theAccademia Carrara, a school of art containing models and pictures;in the small cabinet Pius VII., by Canova. From Bergamo to Lecco railway in l1^ hr.; fares 4 fr., 2 fr. 90,2 fr. 5 c.; from Lecco to Varenna and Calico see p. 130. The line now describes a wide curve towards the S.E., andat stat. Seriate crosses the Serio. Stations Gorlago and Grumello(hence to the Lago dIseo see p. 159). At stat. Palazzolo the Oglio(p. 159), descending from the Lago dIseo, is crossed. Then stat.Coecaglio, with the monastery of Mont Orfano on a height stat.Ospedaletto, and stat. Brescia (see It. 30), commanded by its castle.

27. Route. 151 The slopes near Brescia are sprinkled with numerous villas.The red colour of the mountains is due to the presence ofahundant iron-ore (comp. p. 155). The line speedily quits thehilly district. Stat. Rezzuto. Near -tat. Ponte 8. Marco theChiese is crossed. Beyond stat. Lonato is a short tunnel anda long cutting. A long viaduct now carries the line to Besenzano (p. 152), aharbour at the S.W. extremity of the Lago di Garda (see below).The railway affords an admirable survey of the lake and thepeninsula of Sermione (p. 152), connected with the land by anarrow isthmus. The venerable castle with its pinnacles andtower is especially conspicuous. Next stat. Pozzolengo. In this district, extending from thebanks of the lake to a point considerably beyond Quidizzolo (onthe road from Brescia to Mantua), the obstinate and sanguinarybattle of Solferino was fought on June 24th, 1859, between theunited French and Italian armies and that of Austria.
