I comuni in Nepal sono città e paesi che soddisfano i criteri minimi fissati dal governo. Questi criteri comprendono una popolazione determinata, delle infrastrutture e dei ricavi. Attualmente, ci sono 191 comuni in Nepal di cui 72 sono stati stabiliti nel maggio 2014 e 61 il 2 dicembre 2014 da parte del governo del Nepal tra cui 7 nuove sub metropolitane che fanno in totale 11 città sub metropolitane.[1][2] Nella maggior parte dei casi, i comuni sono stati creati da amalgamando diversi Comitati di Sviluppo dei Villaggi (VDC), rendendo così necessario scegliere un nome per la nuova entità. Ciò a volte può essere il nome del comune più grande dell'ex VDC, ma di solito è una nuova creazione. I nomi elencati sono i nomi ufficiali dei comuni; tuttavia, sono ancora ampiamente utilizzati i nomi precedenti. I comuni in Nepal sono disponibili in tre livelli di autogoverno: comune metropolitano, comune sub-metropolitano e comunale. Il primo livello si applica solo a Kathmandu, il secondo per le città di Pokhara, Lalitpur, Bharatpur, Biratnagar, Nepalgunj, Birganj, Butwal, Itahari e Dharan.
