Brian Hyland (Queens, 12 novembre 1943) è un cantante statunitense. Hyland ha pubblicato numerosi successi bubblegum pop, il più noto dei quali è Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini (1960).[1]
Biografia
[modifica | modifica wikitesto]Nato nel Queens, a New York, nel 1943, studia la chitarra e il clarinetto.[1] All'età di 14 anni co-fonda i Delfis inviando una serie di nastri alle maggiori case discografiche,[1] ma senza ottenere successo e per ciò decide di intraprendere una carriera da solista.[senza fonte]
Nel 1960, all'età di 16 anni, Hyland si guadagna lo status di idolo giovanile grazie al suo primo successo Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, singolo che raggiunge le vette delle classifiche americane Billboard Hot 100 ed in Germania, la terza posizione in Olanda e Norvegia e l'ottava nella Official Singles Chart.[1][2] Il 6 agosto la rivista Cash Box la elegge tra i migliori singoli del 1960.[3] Successivamente passa alla ABC Records per collaborare con Gary Geld e Peter Udell per i successi Let Me Belong to You e I'll Never Stop Wanting You.[1] Ritorna al successo nel 1962 con il singolo Sealed with a Kiss raggiungendo il terzo posto nelle classifiche americane ed inglesi.[4]
La successiva hit Warmed-Over Kisses (Leftover Love) del 1962 segna un primo avvicinamento dell'artista al genere country, che verrà approfondito nei singoli del 1963 I May Not Live to See Tomorrow e I'm Afraid to Go Home e nell'LP Country Meets Folk. Tutte queste pubblicazioni anticipano il country rock di alcuni anni.[1]
I singoli seguenti di Hyland non ottengono i medesimi riscontri commerciali delle prime pubblicazioni.[1] Le sue canzoni del 1966 The Joker Went Wild e Run, Run, Look and See vengono registrate assieme a J. J. Cale e Leon Russell.[1] L'ultima top 5 di Hyland è Gypsy Woman del 1970, una cover degli Impressions.[1]
Tra il 2009 e il 2011 vengono pubblicate tre raccolte di successi di Hyland intitolate Triple Threat.
