Alison Uttley

Alison Uttley (Cromford, 17 dicembre 1884 – High Wycombe, 7 maggio 1976) è stata una scrittrice e docente inglese, autrice di oltre 100 libri. È nota soprattutto per la serie per bambini dedicata a Little Grey Rabbit e Sam Pig. È ricordata anche per il suo romanzo pionieristico per ragazzi A Traveller in Time, che tratta del viaggio nel tempo della regina Maria Stuarda.

Biografia

Nata a Cromford e cresciuta in una fattoria nella campagna del Derbyshire, Alison Taylor ricevette la sua educazione alla Lea School di Holloway e alla Lady Manners School di Bakewell, dove sviluppò un amore per la scienza che le valse una borsa di studio all'Università di Manchester per studiare fisica. Nel 1906 divenne la seconda donna a laurearsi con lode all'università e strinse un'amicizia duratura con il carismatico professor Samuel Alexander.

Dopo l'università Alison Taylor si formò come insegnante al Cambridge Training College for Women (ora Hughes Hall, Cambridge). Nel 1908 divenne insegnante di fisica alla Fulham County Grammar School (in seguito Fulham Cross Girls' School) a Fulham, ovest di Londra, nell'anno in cui la scuola aprì i battenti. Intorno al 1910 viveva a The Old Vicarage, King Street, Knutsford. Nel 1911 sposò James Arthur Uttley. Nel 1914 ebbe il suo unico figlio, John Corin Uttley, che divenne insegnante in una scuola pubblica. James Uttley era incline alla depressione e si suicidò annegandosi nel fiume Mersey nel 1930. Nel 1978, due anni dopo la morte della madre, anche John Corin Uttley si suicidò gettandosi da una scogliera.

Dal 1924 al 1938, gli Uttley vissero a Downs House, 13 Higher Downs, Bowdon, Cheshire, dove una targa blu la commemora. Nel 1938 si trasferì a Beaconsfield, dove viveva anche la scrittrice per bambini Enid Blyton, che la Uttley non ammirava. Aveva anche un rapporto difficile con l'illustratrice dei suoi libri Little Grey Rabbit, Margaret Tempest.

Carriera di scrittrice

In età avanzata la Uttley affermò di aver iniziato a scrivere per mantenere economicamente se stessa e suo figlio dopo essere rimasta vedova, ma in realtà il suo primo libro fu pubblicato nel 1929, prima della morte del marito. Secondo quanto riportato dalla stessa Uttley, una delle sue fonti di ispirazione fu un incontro avvenuto nel 1927 con il professor Alexander a una mostra di pittura ad Altrincham, durante il quale lui la scambiò per un'altra sua ex studentessa e le chiese se continuasse a scrivere. I suoi primi libri erano una serie di racconti sugli animali, tra cui Little Grey Rabbit, The Little Red Fox, Sam Pig e Hare. In seguito scrisse per bambini più grandi e adulti, concentrandosi in particolare su argomenti rurali, in particolare in The Country Child (1931), un racconto romanzato delle esperienze infantili nella fattoria di famiglia, Castle Top Farm, vicino a Cromford.

Una delle sue opere più popolari è A Traveller in Time (1939). Basato sul complotto di Babington di Anthony Babington a Dethick, vicino alla sua casa di famiglia, questo romanzo mescola sogno e fatti storici nella storia di una ragazza del XX secolo trasportata nel XVI secolo, coinvolta in un complotto per liberare Maria Stuarda dal vicino Castello di Wingfield. In seguito la Uttley visse a Beaconsfield, in una casa chiamata Thackers, come quella descritta nel libro. Nel gennaio 1978 la TV della BBC trasmise la serie in cinque puntate A Traveller in Time, basata sul racconto della Uttley. La serie vedeva come protagonisti una nuova arrivata quindicenne, Sophie Thompson, e una stella nascente, Simon Gipps-Kent.

Eredità

Dal 1924 al 1938 la Uttley visse a Downs House, 13 Higher Downs, Bowdon, Cheshire, dove una targa blu la commemora.

Nel 1970 l'Università di Manchester le conferì una laurea honoris causa in Lettere per la sua opera letteraria. Nel 2021 l'università ha intitolato a lei una delle sue residenze universitarie, la Uttley House.

Nel 2009 furono pubblicati i diari privati della Uttley, che è stata anche protagonista di due biografie.
