The Confederate onslaught was so fiercely made,that Colonel Hildebmudts brigade, which waslargely composed of raw troops, fled back in dis-may. The First and the Fourth Brigades, underColonels McDowell and Backland, which had justabout completed a new line, were likewise rapidlyforced back, with the loss of a battery, uponMcClernands division. The latter lay in the rearof Prentisss force, and had been called up to assistSherman on the left, while Hurlbut w:is asked tocome to the aid of Prentiss. By seven oclock tho whole of Shermans lino andMeClerriands left were engaged.
