sorts of fantastic inlays on the spandrils of the arcad-ing: in the fa9ade of the Cathedral of Lucca, in 1204 ; inthe arcaded fa9ade and long galleried flank of the Duomoof Zara in Dalmatia consecrated in 1285 ; and in thechurch of S. Grisogono (1175) in the same city. TheThe arcaded gallery was a very general feature round the apse gdkry cven when absent elsewhere. The semi-dome of the apsewas never exposed in Romanesque architecture, but thewall was carried up as a drum and covered with a roof oftimber and tile, and this wall having but little weight tocarry could safely be pierced by these open arcades. Insome cases the outside of the dome may be seen throughthe arches but generally there is a back wall to thegallery. Now and then, as in two churches at Lucca andthe baptistery at Parma, the colonnettes carry a straightlintel instead of the usual arches. We find the sameapsidal gallery in Lombardy, at S. Fedele in Como, atthe cathedrals of Parma and Modena, at S. Maria Plate LXVIII
