I Rise Against sono una band melodic hardcore/hardcore punk proveniente da Chicago, Illinois, USA. Tutti i componenti dei Rise Against, tranne il batterista, seguono lo stile di vita straight edge.

Nel 1999, Joe Principe e Dan Wleklinski dopo lo scioglimento del loro ex-gruppo 88 Fingers Louie insieme a Tim McIlrath decisero di formare i Rise Against, anche se in origine il loro nome era Transistor Revolt, con il quale pubblicarono il demo autoprodotto Transistor Revolt nel 2000.
L'anno successivo firmano un contratto per l'etichetta Fat Wreck Chords per la quale pubblicano i loro primi due album, The Unraveling, e Revolutions Per Minute rispettivamente nel 2001 e 2003. Successivamente passarono alla Dreamworks Records per la quale registrarono l'album Siren Song of the Counter Culture; tuttavia la Dreamworks Records venne assorbita dalla Universal Music Group e i Rise Against si ritrovarono nella Geffen Records una sussidiaria del gruppo Universal Music Group. Per cui l'album Siren Song of the Counter Culture dell'agosto 2004 risulta in realtà rilasciato da questa etichetta. Il loro quarto album in studio, The Sufferer & The Witness, è stato pubblicato il 4 luglio del 2006. Appeal to Reason, quinto album in studio, è uscito il 7 ottobre 2008. Il 12 maggio 2009 è stato pubblicato Rise Against, extended play di due tracce in edizione limitata pubblicato dalla Fat Wreck Chords, con la quale torna a collaborare dopo sette anni, limitatamente per l'EP. L'album contiene due inediti registrati durante le sessioni di Appeal to Reason.
Il 7 settembre 2010 è stato annunciato sul sito ufficiale, per il 5 ottobre 2010, il loro nuovo DVD Another Station: Another Mile che si concentra più sulla band dal vivo, ma mostra anche filmati inediti dietro le quinte del tour 2009/2010.In più, a partire dal 14 settembre 2010, prima, secondo il chitarrista del gruppo Zach Blair poi, annunciato ufficialmente sul sito, sono iniziate le registrazioni del nuovo album Endgame che è uscito il 15 marzo 2011. Il disco è prodotto ancora una volta a Fort Collins. [4]

Il 23 maggio 2007 i Rise Against annunciarono di approvare la nuova linea di scarpe della Vans fatte con materiali completamente vegetali, vegan, rispettosi dei diritti degli animali. In risposta alle recenti critiche contro la nuova linea Vans, i Rise Against hanno rilasciato una testimonianza sulla loro causa, presente anche sul loro myspace e sito web.

I Rise Against hanno avuto diverse formazioni negli anni, Tim McIlrath e Joe Principe sono rimasti però gli unici costanti membri della band.
