Definito da J. R. Foster come Aptenodytes papua nel 1781.

Suddiviso in 2 sottospecie:

• Pinguino papua ssp ellsworthi (Pygoscelis papua ellsworthi)
• Pinguino papua ssp papua (Pygoscelis papua papua)

Da alcuni autori considerata un'ulteriore sottospecie il Pygoscelis papua taeniata per la popolazione dell'Isola Macquarie.

Lunghezza: 76-81 cm.
Peso: 5-8 kg.

regione circumpolare antartica. Predilige le zone con un leggero strato di pack (ghiaccio)

Si riproduce in colonie, spesso molto numerose su zone costiere prive di ghiaccio

Il Pygoscelis papua viene anche chiamato pinguino Gentoo.

I pinguini di questa specie sono i più veloci sott'acqua, potendo raggiungere velocità di circa 36 km/h. Per questo motivo, gli sviluppatori della distribuzione Linux Gentoo hanno scelto tale nome.
