Tra le voci che hanno preceduto la cerimonia, c'era la presunta performance di Ray Davies dei The Kinks insieme alla band inglese Babyshambles, che avrebbero dovuto esibirsi in "You Really Got Me", ma la performance è stata cancellata.[7]
La cerimonia è stata aperta con una performance dei Klaxons; nel corso della serata si sono esibiti anche Dizzee Rascal, i Gallows insieme a Lethal Bizzle, The Cribs con Johnny Marr e Kate Nash. I Lightspeed Champion hanno suonato il loro singolo "Galaxy of the Lost".
La cerimonia di premiazione è stata seguita dal concerto NME Big Gig nell'adiacente O2 Arena, dove si sono esibiti The Cribs con Johnny Marr, i Klaxons, i Bloc Party, i Kaiser Chiefs e i Manic Street Preachers, che hanno suonato insieme a Tom Clarke dei The Enemy e Cerys Matthews.
Il 27 febbraio 2008 è stato regalato insieme a NME un set speciale contenente un cd con 14 tracce registrato durante il concerto e intitolato "NME Awards 2008".

- Razorlight: hanno ricevuto una nomination come peggior album per il loro secondo lavoro Razorlight, a cui lo stesso NME aveva dato un giudizio di 8/10. È stato quindi l'album con la votazione più alta ad ottenere una nomination come peggior album.
2009
- Oasis nominati in sette categorie, un record.
- Villain of the Year: (6º anno consecutivo) assegnato a George W. Bush.
2010
- Lady Gaga ha paradossalmente vinto il premio come artista meglio vestita e quello come artista peggio vestita.

Anche se gli NME Awards sono stati creati in origine come una "alternativa" ai Brit awards, hanno ricevuto critiche per essere diventati sempre più commerciali. Dopo la cerimonia del 2002, un articolo su telegraph.co.uk riportava che i vincitori degli NME Awards "erano quasi intercambiabili" con i vincitori dei Brit Awards, e criticava l'allora editore Ben Knowles per quello che era stato visto come un attacco ipocrita alla natura commerciale dei Brit Awards.[8]
Le nomination del 2008 sono state criticate sul The Guardian per una completa assenza di diversità e per la mancata presenza femminile.[9]
