Dick Heckstall-Smith, nome completo Richard Malden Heckstall-Smith (Ludlow, 16 settembre 1934 – 17 dicembre 2004), è stato un sassofonista rock/blues britannico.

Infanzia

Figlio del preside della scuola locale a Ludlow, Dick crebbe a Knighton, Galles, prendendo lezioni di pianoforte, clarinetto e sassofono. In seguito, seguì il padre a Gordonstoun, poi ad Dartington. Completò la formazione a Foxhole e all'università di Sidney Sussex, Cambridge, dove coordinava la band universitaria. È qui che approfondisce lo studio del sassofono, attratto dalla musica di Sidney Bechet, Lester Young e Wardell Gray.

Esordi musicali

Trasferitosi a Londra, entra a far parte di gruppi quali Blues Incorporated e Alexis Korner's groundbreaking blues band. È inoltre uno dei soci fondatori della Graham Bond Organisation insieme a Jack Bruce e Ginger Baker. Nel 1967 comincia a suonare per John Mayall nei Bluesbreakers, con Jon Hiseman e Mick Taylor.

Colosseum

Nel 1968 insieme a Jon Hiseman fonda i Colosseum, dove può finalmente dar sfogo alla notevole tecnica musicale al sassofono (era famoso perché soleva suonare con due sassofoni contemporaneamente), con sonorità jazz rock / fusion. Heckstall-Smith firma molti dei brani più famosi della band, con cui suonerà sempre, anche dopo la reunion, avvenuta nel 1994.

Altre collaborazioni

Nel periodo di inattività dei Colosseum (1971-1994), Dick suona con vari gruppi, tra cui Manchild, Sweet Pain, Big Chief, Tough Tenors, The Famous Bluesblasters, Mainsqueeze and DHSS, e vari artisti, come Victor Brox, Keith Tillman e John O'Leary. Suona come ospite d'onore nei dischi e nei concerti del bluesman intaliano Guido Toffoletti. Con la Guido Toffoletti's Blues Society partecipa alla trasmissione televisiva D.O.C. di Renzo Arbore (marzo 1982). Nell'ultimo periodo, partecipa al progetto "Blues and Beyond" con Jack Bruce, John Mayall e Peter Green (chitarrista dei Fleetwood Mac).

Dick Heckstall-Smith è morto nel dicembre 2004, dopo aver pubblicato l'ultimo album solista Blowing the Blues - Fifty Years Playing the British Blues con Peter Grant.
