L'edizione 1897-98 della First Division è stata il decimo campionato di calcio inglese.

Il campionato vide la vittoria finale dello Sheffield United, che si aggiudicò il suo primo e finora unico campionato.

Nessuna squadra fu retrocessa in Second Division perché il campionato successivo avrebbe incluso 18 partecipanti, anche se i play-off con le promovende dalla Second Division furono fatti ugualmente disputare.

Capocannoniere del torneo fu George Wheldon dell'Aston Villa, con 21 reti.
