Arnold Sommerfeld
Arnold Johannes Wilhelm Sommerfeld (Königsberg, 5 dicembre 1868 – Monaco di Baviera, 26 aprile 1951) è stato un fisico tedesco.
Si occupò di fisica teorica, ed in particolare di fisica atomica e quantistica; introdusse fra l'altro la costante di struttura fine in meccanica quantistica. Fra i suoi studenti si hanno fra gli altri Werner Heisenberg, Wolfgang Pauli, Peter Debye, Hans Bethe.
Inoltre viene generalmente attribuita a Sommerfeld la prima, teorica, descrizione dei tachioni.

Arnold Sommerfeld studiò scienze matematiche e fisiche nell'università della sua città natale, nella Prussia orientale. Il suo relatore di tesi fu il matematico Ferdinand von Lindemann; frequentò corsi di matematici famosi quali Adolph Hurwitz e David Hilbert, ed il fisico Emil Wiechert. Conseguì il dottorato nel 1891, rimanendo a Königsberg fino al conseguimento dell'abilitazione all'insegnamento, che ottenne nel 1892.
